These are the activities that I have joined, completed and done throughout my first semester of my third third year studies.

We took our class picture for this year. This was how it turned out in the end.

One of the subjects that I took this semester, Thermodynamics 2, has made it compulsory for students to make a working prototype of systems using the thermodynamics principle. For this project, I was positioned in an all-female group, consisting of five members.

My group has chosen to make a conveyor. The tricky part of our prototype was the boiler, which was to be fabricated as there were no such item that suited the function and characteristics. The boiler needed to attain high temperature and pressure for it to produce a high velocity steam. the steam is then used to turn the fan, which was made out of an aluminum drink can. The fan is attached to a shaft connecting the conveyor. Thus, when the fan turns, the conveyor will be moving as well. Overall, the prototype was working well after a few modifications to the fan and steam nozzle.

Thermodynamics Project

Design Day is a platform where students showcase their project designs in groups. Each batch has their own project, and my batch was to design a new machine to update a traditional method of doing something. My group of four males and myself, decided on a Coconut Milk Machine which will produce coconut milk faster and easier than the traditional method. Though my group did not win any prizes, I believe that this project is one of the steps for me to further improve myself in designing machines in the future.

Design Day 2010

I was one of the Promotion and Advertising Committee for the UTeM's Formula Varsity which was held on 10th October 2010. Students are challenged to build their own race car, and race it during the final race after going through several tests and a qualifying race. through this activity I was able to enhance my soft skills, such as teamwork and also communication skills.

I also joined Rakan Muda's program in July, which was to stay with a family during a weekend and participating in their activities during the weekend. Throughout this program, i have gained new experiences, friends and also family. Below are pictures taken from the program and with the family that i had stayed with during the weekend.

In whole, I hope that these activities will give me added values and I also hope that I can use my experience through these activities in the future.

THIRD REFLECTION: MY OVERALL VIEW ON ALL ASSIGNMENTS

In this third reflection, I will summarize all the assignments that have been carried out during this semester in the subject Technical Communication 2. These includes cover letter, resume, mock interview, mock meeting and recommendation report. I think this will be my longest reflection.

A recommendation report describes a general format for a short report, which can adapt to the needs of specific assignments. Overall, my recommendation report was a group effort. As we observed in UTeM, there are not as many parking spaces allocated to cater both its students and staff. Due to this phenomenon, many students tend to park their vehicles at the staff area, on the side of the road, and even double park. Thus, we decided to make a recommendation report about choosing an appropriate solution which is either multilevel car parks or mass car parks. The materials gathered were first hand, as we ourselves are students of UTeM and also facing the same problem. We also obtained materials from other universities, to compare their system of parking and solution.

For the recommendation report, our group consists of 5 persons, thus, we divided the task evenly among each other. The division of task was done mutually and we met once a week to discuss the problems faced and also to add any new inputs or new ideas along the way. So far, every problem has been successfully solved, either among ourselves or we would take it to our lecturer for advice.

Our presentation of the recommendation report was done in 2 different ways. Firstly, we presented the report in a hardcopy booklet. All the information was included in this booklet. And secondly, we did a verbal presentation of our findings and the result of recommendation of our proposal. In this presentation, we summarized the recommendation report to our classmates and our lecturer in a group. Each of the group members were assigned to present about their part whilst constructing the recommendation report. I believe that this was an effective way to present a project, as the lecturer and fellow classmates can ask questions at the end of the presentation in case of any inquiries of our recommendation or about the findings of our research.

On the other hand, I was also assigned to other assignments throughout this semester, such as preparing a cover letter and a resume. I also underwent a mock interview. I believe that all these assignments will bring use in the future. Throughout these assignments, I have learnt different formats on how to present my resume and cover letter, according to types of jobs and their requirements as compared my work with peers and other classmates. Furthermore, I have also learnt how to synchronize the contents of the cover letter and I believe that this has practically prepared me for my future career.

On the other hand, a mock meeting was also held, but in an informal manner as it was done in groups and the lecturer only acts as a moderator and answers our query and others. This mock meeting practice trains me to be a person who is firm, respectable, fair, and also a charismatic person. In this mock meeting, I was chosen by my group members as the chairperson. By now, I realized that a chairperson’s task is not easy. In order to maintain my board of directors from any irrelevant interruptions and also picking useful exchange of views, I had to control and divert my board of directors constantly from small talks and the merging of unimportant issues.

Thus far, I have improved many skills throughout the assignments given. For example, teamwork, verbal and problem solving skills to name a few, are improved tremendously. In the future, I hope that the activities could be more vibrant so that students would not be bored and that the activities could have a larger impact as the students are enjoying themselves and paying attention as well. Furthermore, the activities should mix everyone in the class. For example, having 2 groups as different companies and having exchange meetings to solve certain problems. This will not only make the students interact more with each other, but it also help to increase their communications skills among each other.

My learning in communications skills thus far have increased upon following this course. I can practice my verbal skills as we were encouraged to use English language during class sessions. Thus, by interacting with my fellow course mates, I have observed many flaws of mine and theirs (my course mates) in using the English language. So, I would say that I have found new ways and knowledge in using the English language better. I recognized the changes upon the execution of my recommendation report and also my mock interview. In these assignments, my writing skills and verbal communications skills have improved yet again. Furthermore, I get to communicate more with my fellow course mates via E-portfolio by commenting on their E-portfolio pages.

In my opinion, the E-portfolio has helped me developed in usage of the English language. After a semester of maintaining my E-portfolio, I can see that I make fewer mistakes upon writing my artifacts as I have to repair my mistakes after it is commented by my peers, facilitator and lecturer. In time, I observed that I have also developed the skill to locate grammatical error in my peers’ E-portfolio.

In conclusion, the E-portfolio can be further introduced to other Malaysian students so that they will be exposed to the usage of technology and gain useful experiences as I did for both their studies and further career.

SECOND REFLECTION: MY EXPERIENCE IN A MOCK INTERVIEW

Recently, I have gone through a mock interview. I was supposed to prepare a resume, cover letter and a cutting of a job advertisement of my choice. All stated articles have been posted in this e-portfolio in respective sections.

Before this mock interview, I already have experienced a few real life interviews. From these real interviews, I have gained a lot of knowledge for any interviews to come. Research is my main strategy for interviews. I look for strength, weakness and also information about the interviewers and who or what organizations that they are representing. Furthermore, I would practice my dialogues so that I would not stutter and I will be more confident to answer questions that would be asked during the interview. On the other hand, I will also conduct a mock meeting with family members, whereby I will become the interviewee and the others, the interviewer.

Back to the mock interview done recently, I took the role of a fresh graduate. To me, everything went smoothly, and I was able to communicate well with the interviewer. The questions asked were basic level and I believe that I have answered it well. I am confident that I will make the cut if it were a real job interview.

In my view, a few of the candidates have lack of confidence to communicate in the English language. They tend to not have adequate vocabulary and grammar, thus making it harder to understand their point in the discussion. However, there were few who braved the odds and carry on with the interview. This remark is not criticism; however, I do hope Malaysians especially my fellow friends would improve their proficiency in English so that we can be above the best in the industry.

In my opinion, using English as a second language is important as an engineer because there are possibilities of working with foreign people. Furthermore, multilingual individuals will receive a better chance of employment. My family for example, is multilingual. My mother is able to speak Malay, English and Mandarin. My father, on the other hand, can speak Malay, English, and French. My sister is undergoing a third language course, which is Arabic language at her school. I myself, have taken communication Arabic, higher Arabic (Bahasa Arab Tinggi) and also basic Japanese as third languages. Though it might sound like a handful, I do learn a few phrases in different languages of my parents’ third language to communicate better with other people.

In conclusion, this mock interview is a good activity to enhance skills to fight for jobs after graduation.

PREREFLECTION, AN INTRODUCTION TO E-PORTFOLIO

E-portfolio is an assignment for one of my subject, taken this semester, Technical Communication BLHW 3402. This assignment is carried out for me to understand on how far technology can make me stand out, especially when fighting for a spot in interviews or job applications, accreditation and also assessment.

A blog (which is a contraction of the term “web log”) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events or materials. There are many types of blogs which includes personal blogs (most common) and corporate and organizational blogs. Blogs are also sorted by genre, media type, and device (such as mobile phones and PDA).

E-portfolio or electronic portfolio or digital portfolio is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the web. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user’s abilities and platform for self-expression and can be maintained dynamically over time.

My E-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that provides actual evidence of my achievements. I have been taught to use this digital identity via presentation software or tools to create web pages. Thus, learning of these tools will make me more adaptive to the now digital world and also enhance my creativity in order to stand out from others from my league.

Upon learning and using this E-portfolio, I will feature a recommendation report, cover letter, and resume to record experiences throughout this assignment. Hopefully, I can produce informative artifacts for my E-portfolio. In addition, I hope my peers would comment my artifacts in order for me to improve my E-portfolio.
